This study explored the ability of Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI) drumming rhythms to reduce anxiety and anxiety-based behaviors, such as aggresson, self-stimulatory behaviors, and emotional outbursts, including tantrums and oppositional behavior.

Like with all our studies, this one used a custom-made recording created for each child. And, like our earliest research, each recording was made based on our detailed intake and on responses to a live performance with me using a Gonga drum (a variation on an African Djembe and a Afro-Cuban Conga). This takes us back to our roots with live drumming followed by custom recordings. And the results mirrored our first study showing significant and consistent reduction in anxiety from both the live drumming and the subsequent recordings.

Here is an excerpt:

I began this study by meeting with each child privately and observing how they responded to a variety of REI drumming rhythms that were documented to calm anxiety in children with autism. Each subject’s custom-made REI recording was created based the REI Custom Program Intake and on their responses to my live performance.

Teachers or teacher aids were instructed to play each subject’s recording at least once a day at a time when the subject was displaying anxiety or anxiety-based behaviors such as emotional outbursts self-stimulatory behaviors, or aggression. Some children experienced generalized anxiety and, in these cases, the subjects listened at a time when this anxiety was generally at its worst during the day or when it was convenient for the teacher or aid to play the recording…

…All of the ten children in this study were calmed by their Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI) recordings, many every time they heard their custom recording. Anxiety reduction can take many forms, especially with the large variation of symptomatic behaviors and characteristics present in children on the autism spectrum. This study illustrates the success of REI’s ability to reduce anxiety in a classroom setting.

You can read the entire study here

Getting Calm with Brain Shift Radio

You can use Brain Shift Radio to reduce anxiety by simply choosing “I’d like to be calmer” from Auto Mode Question and then letting us know what your goal is on the second question, such as “I’m anxious”. We’ll choose a great mix for you, so just sit back and relax.

You can also choose the Calm category from the Track browser and load a track of your choice. With our calming tracks, it’s hard to choose the wrong one.

YES! We are.

I got to play around with the prototype a couple of weeks ago and had a blast. At one point early in the development process we weren’t sure if we are going to be able to build something that has the full functionality of the web app – mixing of rhythm and ambient and track swapping, specifically – but our awesome team made it happen.

We are currently optimizing the code and building out the interfaces – iOs and Android. Things are moving smoothly. I expect we’ll something in public beta soon.

Keep your eye on this blog. I’ll be posting more as we get closer to launch day.

Recently a new study was published in the Netherlands exploring the core technique behind the tracks on Brain Shift Radio. In this study 100 children ages 6-13 listened to Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI) music to aid in concentration and learning. 50 Children listened to an REI recording while 50 children listened to a placebo recording.

This study showed an increase in sustained attention and performance (a decrease in mistakes) for those children listening to the REI recording compared to the children who used the placebo recording. To quote the study:

The children of the “Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention” group in general took more time, made fewer mistakes and failures which resulted in an improvement in the number of correct responses. This may be regarded as a particularly good result of the study, especially when we look at the fact that the test administration took place in the last weeks of the school year…

The type of REI recording used in this study mirrors many of the tracks in the lower intensity levels of the Focus category on Brain Shift Radio. These would be tracks in f1 and f2 with tempos at 8 beats per second.

Since this study began, we released Brain Shift Radio and have, through subsequent research and parsing extensive user data from BSR, determined that faster tempo rhythms provide an even better result for sustained attention than those at 8 beats per second.

So, if you want the best possible focusing effects with BSR for working on a specific project, I recommend choosing Focusing tracks at the f3 and f4 level. You may also answer the Focus question (the second window in Auto mode) as either “I need help getting started on a project” or “I’m on a deadline and need to get something done”.

This study is yet another study done on REI, the core technique used for the Brain Shift Radio tracks, showing improved attention. The results of this study mirror the results seen in another Dutch study showing that attention and performance increased when listening to an REI recording. In that study, the REI results showed twice the improvements of 20 MG of Ritalin on a normalized Continuous Performance Test (CPT). You read a blog post about that study here.

We are excited by these results and grateful to researcher Wim Oostra for his hard work designing and conducting this study and following-through on getting the final paper published. You can read an English translation of the study paper here.

Note: Wim undertook this study on his own volition. Neither the Strong Institute nor Brain Shift Radio had a hand in the design or implementation of the study. We did, however, provide the research staff with the REI recordings.

We constantly study the efficacy of Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI), the core technique of Brain Shift Radio. And occasionally, I write up our findings in a formal paper. I just finished writing about a gem of a study we did on REI and anxiety reduction in a public school setting.

In this instance, the REI recording reduced anxiety every time it was played, often resulting in a significant decrease in physical aggression. This helped calm not only the child who was anxious, but the entire classroom as well.

Here is an excerpt:

Nancy was a highly verbal, though often inappropriate, extroverted, non-compliant and somewhat physically aggressive 12 year-old. Nancy was quite a force. She entered the room singing a Disney movie song. She engaged with me to the extent that she sang and danced around me, so I just jumped in playing. I started with basic calming rhythms, which had no impact initially as she kept on singing and tried dancing with the psychologist. After about 3 minutes she abruptly stopped singing, turned to me with a serious look and put her hands on the edge of my drum. I stopped playing.

Nancy then began telling me how great I was and how awesome my drumming was. I tried to thank her and start playing again but she kept on, telling me just how amazing I truly was. This exaggerated praise lasted for several minutes until I decided to start playing again. Once I did, she began singing and dancing again until she tripped and fell into the recorder. I kept playing, lowering my volume and rhythmic intensity, as the psychologist held her. She didn’t get hurt when she tripped and did not seemed bothered by the incident. She did, however, sit next to the psychologist when he directed her to the chair next to his.

You can read the entire blog post here: Case Study: Nancy, 12 year-old with Autism, Anxiety and Aggressive behavior

I should note that the recordings used in this study mirror many of the rhythm tracks in the Calm category of Brain Shift Radio. You can achieve results similar to this study by selecting tracks with intensity levels of 4 or 5 or by answering the intensity (2nd) question as, “I’m agitated”.

As usual these tracks are automatically included in system-generated mixes (Auto Mode). You can also find them in the Track browser. The are the first 20 in the Track listing when you first load the radio, but you can also find them in category searches.

We’ve been getting a lot of emails from families who are using Brain Shift Radio to calm their loved ones with autism. You can read our page here: http://brainshiftradio.com/autism

I don’t usually post press releases on this blog but I know I can’t present the information any better, so here it is:

Brain Shift Radio Technology Calms Individuals with Autism

Brain Shift Radio Brings Anxiety Reduction within Easy Reach

SANTA FE, NM, February 21, 2013 — Harnessing 20-plus years of clinical research in auditory brain stimulation, the Strong Institute has developed a customized web app that reduces anxiety for individuals with Autism.

“We are not doing anything new here.”, says Brain Shift Radio Creative Director, Jeff Strong. “For tens of thousands of years, in disparate cultures across the globe, rhythm has been used to shift consciousness and address abnormalities in cognitive function. We have taken the culture out of the mix. We have put on the lab coat and worked to understand what rhythms drive the brain toward improved performance. And http://brainshiftradio.com/autism is the current manifestation of our neurological work.”

The core technique used in Brain Shift Radio was developed from the Strong Institute’s research mapping how auditory brain stimulation can enhance cognitive function. Called Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention (REI), their evidence-based therapy offers improvements in anxiety, sleep, and cognition, among other areas. For nearly two decades, REI has been successfully used for longterm improvement in anxiety reduction and improved sensory processing issues.

“The technology of Brain Shift Radio is a natural extension of REI and makes our work more accessible than ever before: A parent or a therapist can reduce a child’s anxiety immediately and the cost is less than 23 cents a day. It’s a wonderful thing to make our REI technology so accessible and affordable to the public.” says Strong.

A mother new to Brain Shift Radio reported her son’s immediate response, “While I was playing the radio he laid down and closed his eyes. He didn’t fall asleep at that point but I’ve never seen anything like it. He never has been that calm in his life.”

Pioneering the contemporary use of rhythm as a therapeutic tool has been a life-long pursuit for Jeff Strong. As an adult with ADHD, he found that drumming helped him self-regulate and improve his focus. His early interest in the ethnomusicological roots of therapeutic rhythm led to clinical research and the evidence-based therapy. The Strong Institute’s current client base spans the range of neurological disorders, from Autism Spectrum Disorders and ADHD to PTSD and Sleep Disorders.

“The Strong Institute is known for our out-of the-box approach to neurological disorders.”, says Strong. “When, in fact, we are simply improving upon techniques that have been around an awfully long time. As well, very few therapies address anxiety reduction for individuals with Autism. Most focus on behavior modification. Because a calm nervous system is a receptive nervous system, REI is a beautiful complement to any applied behavior program.”

“Our work started with children on the Autism Spectrum. We found rhythmic combinations that caused immediate calm. The perfect mix of novelty (in the complexity of the rhythmic stimulus) and progressive stimulation made for a unique approach to so many of the challenges faced by individuals with Autism. As our data grew, so did our ability to address more complex and varied symptoms of neurological disorders.”

Pulled directly from the Strong Institute’s research and databases, Brain Shift Radio’s rhythm and ambient tracks are presented in a playful, yet prescriptive environment. Users select the areas they wish to improve (calm or sleep for instance) and the system will present a dual-stream of rhythm and ambient tracks that will accomplish that goal.

Brain Shift Radio is an innovation in technology that customizes the REI rhythms for each individual user. The material adapts to the user’s needs and offers the user great flexibility in their experience. Gizmodo.com recently wrote, ”Certainly, the site’s interface and presentation are impeccable. Ambient and rhythmic tracks can be remixed and swapped to the listener’s pleasure; the community is active in building mixes; and the music streams at a high-quality, through an elegantly simple player.”

Brain Shift Radio’s twin technologies of clinically-proven therapeutic rhythms and dual-streaming tracks are timely: BSR reduces anxiety, is non-addictive, has no side effects, and does not induce habituation. And its ability to calm a child on the spectrum offers parents a cost-effective web tool to improve the quality of their children’s lives.

______________________________________________________

Brain Shift Radio supports parents’ ability to obtain calm by offering a free trial and rock bottom subscription rates. Please visit http://brainshiftradio.com/autism.

The Strong Institute, founded in 1994, is a pioneer in the field of custom auditory brain stimulation. Known primarily for their work with individuals on the Autism spectrum, the Institute also has a major impact in ADHD, Anxiety Disorders, Traumatic brain injury, PTSD, and Sleep Disorders, among others. The Strong Institute’s mission is to utilize technology and data to research, develop, and deliver the best possible auditory brain stimulation programs for individuals with neurological disorders. And for those without. Brain Shift Radio is a current manifestation of this mission.
